Questions
How will I know if you are the right therapist for me?
The only way to know for sure is to come in for a session. Most people have a good sense of whether I am the right fit after the first session. With that being said, I also offer free 15 minute consultation appointments to all beginning clients. During this call, we will briefly discuss what it is that is bringing you in for therapy, and I’ll try to let you know my initial thoughts regarding what our work together might look like.
Where is your practice?
I currently provide therapy in a fully-digital manner, and will continue to work in this way for the foreseeable future. I am very excited by virtual therapy, and think that this form of treatment has a lot to offer (we're just getting started)! I am licensed to see clients in Alabama and Georgia.
Who do you work with?
I provide counseling for adolescents, adults, and couples who are currently residing in Alabama or Georgia. My common practice areas include anxiety, depression, identity development, career counseling, relationship issues, grief, and trauma. I have specific expertise in work related to mindfulness/meditation, and providing counseling to academically gifted and high achieving individuals.
What can I expect from therapy?
Once you have made a decision to see a therapist, you still might be apprehensive about the process. It is common to feel nervous before your first appointment, and the process of therapy (like many things in life) can take some getting used to. In many ways, therapy is a shared process where we are both working to help you grow. Although you and I will travel through this process together, it is ultimately your journey and you will make your own decisions. I will try my best to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, and bear witness to whatever comes up in our work together.
What happens during the first session?
The initial session is the time for you to start to share your story, talk about your goals and what you would like to change. It will often feel more like an interview than a therapy session, because I am trying to effectively and efficiently understand the context of your concerns. We are establishing a relationship that will become the foundation for working together. You will begin to figure out some goals, I will begin to figure out how to help you get there, and we will both assess whether we are a good fit.
How long do appointments last?
Appointments are either 50 minutes or 80 minutes. Generally, I recommend individuals to schedule 50 minute sessions and couples to schedule 80 minute sessions.
How often will we meet?
To begin, I recommend meeting once per week or every other week. I find it’s important to gain some momentum in the beginning by meeting regularly or progress can stall out. Once some or all of your goals are met, you may prefer to space sessions out.
Can we meet virtually? Do you provide online counseling?
Yes, all sessions take place online using a secure video system (Zoom). Established clients can also hold some sessions by telephone, if needed. I will make sure to always be in a private place during our sessions, where nobody can hear what we are saying. I request that you do the same, if possible.
How much do you charge?
I charge $250 per 50-minute session and $375 per 80-minute session. Payment will be collected at the time of service.
Can I use my health insurance?
If you have a health insurance policy, it will often (but not in all cases) provide some coverage for mental health services. I am considered an "out-of-network provider" for health insurance plans. This means that if we work together, you will need to pay for services in each session, and I will give you receipts and do whatever I can to help you receive the reimbursement you might be entitled to receive. It is important that you find out exactly what mental health services your insurance policy covers. If you have questions about your coverage, discuss them with your plan administrator or your human resources officer.
Please be aware that insurance companies often require therapists to provide them with a clinical diagnosis. Health and treatment records are typically requested by insurance companies when you apply for life insurance and disability insurance. Though all insurance companies claim to keep such information confidential, once it is in their hands I have no control over what they do with the information. Do remember that you always have the right not to seek reimbursement for the services I offer to avoid the problems described above.
What is your cancellation policy?
I require 24 hours notice of cancellation or you will need to pay for the late cancellation fee ($125). This fee will also be required if you no-show for a scheduled appointment.
What theoretical approach do you use?
I have an active, engaged style, and I regularly use techniques rooted in mindfulness and acceptance to facilitate growth. I am most strongly influenced by cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). I strive provide services that are sensitive to all types of cultural and individual identities, and I try my best to practice cultural sensitivity and humility in both my personal and professional life.
Do you prescribe medication?
No, I do not prescribe medication. Some of my patients find that medication is helpful, but many of them also progress well in therapy without medication. If you want to be evaluated for psychiatric medication, either contact your primary care physician or a psychiatrist.
Are there any issues or types of clients that you don't work with?
I do not currently conduct child custody evaluations, nor do I provide custody recommendations. I also don’t provide treatment for acute psychotic disorders.
